Boiler Systems Operation. In steam heating systems, a boiler furnace heats water by means of a gas or oil-fired burner and turns it into steam. Turn the lever on the valve to the left to open the valve. Close the air valves using a screwdriver or a pair of needle-nose pliers and turn the valve clockwise. Open the water supply shut-off valve on the supply tank to allow water to enter the system. Locate the radiator that is closest to the boiler for the heating system and open the air valve.

(Reply to #1) #2. Re: Running water sound in hot water heating pipes. First, you have a BOILER there, not a furnace. A furnace heats and circulates hot air; a BOILER heats and circulates hot water. The sound of "running water or water trickling or rushing thru the pipes" is a classic symptom of AIR IN THE PIPING SYSTEM.
When the system is hot, push down on the handle to see if steam comes out. Stand away from the outlet — the steam is boiling hot. If no steam comes out, call a serviceperson to replace the valve immediately. Check the water level once a month: The water-level gauge has valves on each side. Open them both and make sure that the water level is in the middle, and then close the valves.
