Boiler in a power plant has two functions. The Combustion system converts energy in coal to Heat. Water and steam system converts the heat to steam at high pressures and temperatures. This series explains the working of the boiler in modern power plant.
The boiler in a coal-fired power plant converts chemical energy contained within the coal into heat energy that is captured and carried away in hot, high-pressure steam (Figure 3.2). Coal-burning technology has a long history and has seen many plant configurations, but the most important type of plant in modern use is the pulverized coal-fired power plant, often abbreviated as PC plant.
The heat from combustion of the coal boils water in the boiler to produce steam. In modern power plant, boilers produce steam at a high pressure and temperature. The steam is then piped to a turbine. The high pressure steam impinges and expands across a number of sets of blades in the turbine. The impulse and the thrust created rotates the turbine.
The markets for new coal-fired steam generators will be driven by 21st century technologies that provide high-efficiency, low-pollutant emissions, and low-cost electricity.
A presentation by Hitachi (now Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems) gives a rate of 7%/min from 40% to 100% output for the steam generators of new hard coal or lignite-fired plants (Busekrus, 2012), while brochures by the company suggest even 10%/min is possible (MHPS, 2014a,b).
The average, annual operating heat rate of U.S. coal-fired power plants is approximately 10,400 Btu/kWh. The design heat rate of a facility is based on full-load operation with no boiler blowdown, whereas most reported heat rates of operating facilities include performance during off-peak loads and include boiler blowdown.
The quantity of coal ash produced at coal-fired thermal power plants varies from 5% to 45% depending on the type and source of coal used as fuel in the furnace. The coal ash produced at coal-fired thermal power plants is classified into two types, i.e., fly ash (FA) and bottom ash.

Coal-fired plants produce electricity by burning coal in a boiler to produce steam. The steam produced, under tremendous pressure, flows into a turbine, which spins a generator to create electricity. The steam is then cooled, condensed back into water and returned to the boiler to start the process over.
Technology Description. A steam turbine is driven with high pressure steam produced by. a boiler or heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Unlike gas turbines or microturbines, steam turbines do not directly consume fuel. Rather, the fuel driving the process is the fired boiler or plant equipment that produces heat for the HRSG (e.g., a gas turbine).
Jan 01, 2017 · Efficiency of a Coal Fired Boiler in a Typical Thermal Power Plant. A power plant is assembly of systems or subsystems to generate and deliver mechanical or electrical energy. 10-26 Consider a coal-fired steam power plant that produces 175 MW of electric power. The power plant operates on a simple ideal Rankine cycle with turbine inlet conditions of 7 MPa and 550 degree C and a condenser pressure of 15 kPa. The coal has a heating value (energy released when the fuel is burned) of 29,300 kJ/kg.
The hot, condensed steam water is run through pipes that are cooled by the cooler water (withdrawn from the Ocmulgee River and Lake Juliette reservoir in this case). The condensed water is thus cooled down and then recirculated back through the coal-fired boiler to again turn to steam and power the turbines.

Setting the Benchmark: The World’s Most Efficient Coal-Fired Power Plants. As the steam passes through each turbine module, the pressure decreases. These modules are referred to as the high-pressure (HP), intermediate-pressure (IP), and low-pressure (LP) turbine sections. Some turbine designs feature multiple IP or LP modules,

A pulverized coal-fired boiler is an industrial or utility boiler that generates thermal energy by burning pulverized coal that is blown into the firebox. The basic idea of a firing system using pulverised fuel is to use the whole volume of the furnace for the combustion of solid fuels. Coal is ground to the size of a fine grain into the boiler, mixed with air and burned in the flue gas flow. Biomass and other materials can also be added to the mixture. Coal contains mineral matter which is conv
Water and steam are the lifeblood of any steam-driven power facility, and proper chemistry control is critically important to plant operation, reliability, the bottom line, and especially

Conventional PF coal-fired boilers, currently being used in the power industry, use air for combustion in which the nitrogen from the air (approximately 79% vol) dilutes combustion products such as CO 2 and water vapor in the flue gas. During oxyfuel combustion, a combination of oxygen (typically of greater than 95% purity) and recycled flue gas is used for combustion of the fuel.
Coal-fired boilers are mainly operated at either subcritical or supercritical conditions. From a thermo-physics perspective, two phase mixtures of water and steam are replaced by a single supercritical fluid when the boiler pressure increases above the critical pressure of 22.12 MPa and the corresponding saturation temperature of 374 °C (Shen and Cheng, 2004).
This gas contains carbon dioxide, water vapor, as well as substances such as nitrogen oxides (NO x), sulfur oxides (SO x), mercury, traces of other metals, and, for coal-fired plants, fly ash. Solid waste ash from coal-fired boilers must also be removed. Some coal ash can be recycled for building materials. Fossil fueled power stations are major emitters of CO 2, a
