Normally the pitch in the mains is high at the boiler and the pipes pitch downhill. Some older systems are counter flow and the pipes pitch back toward the boiler. Either way the thing to remember is if you were a drop of water in that pipe is there a way for you to get back to the boiler by gravity. Pictures will tell the story.
